Dietary guidelines of the Asian-Pacific countries: introduction

Abstract
This seminar was held on Tuesday 24 April at the International Union of Food Science and Technology held at COEX in Seoul from April 22~27, 2001. The seminar was sponsored by Meat and Livestock Australia and the program was arranged by the cochairs, Prof CW Binnus from Australia and Prof HK Moon, the President of the Korean Dietetic Association.
The purpose of Dietary Guidelines are explained in the introduction to the Australian Dietary Guidelines: 'These Dietary Guidelines provide advice to the general population about the choice of foods to eat, so that their usual diet contributes to a healthy lifestyle and is consistent with minimal risk for the development of diet-related diseases. Nutrition is a complex science and communication of the message demands more information and explanation than can be given in brief statements. For health professionals the background papers provide the necessary information, in conjunction with the food guides.
